I've been following these helos for the last couple days and still at a loss as to what they're up to.
Remember that only a small part of military aircraft actually "squawk" on ADS-B frequencies, so we really have no idea the true number aloft. Would be nice to get some "eyes-on" information..
Very true. I watched on visual all of the black flights coming and going from Belvoir/Davison for almost 3 years and none of them squawked on ADS-B yet I'm looking at a sortie of 3 at 1,000' flying by.
It seems that (this from a close fam member that is comm/nav specialist) ADS-B is rarely picked up from aircraft flying below 2000 ft. The lower they are, the worse it is. Sometimes gets "skips" up to 4000.
The rules are a little different when operating inside an ADIZ. Everything is supposed to squawk.
just saw a flight of three flying low not 20 minutes ago, they're not shown on here
ADSB Exchange tracker website is largely volunteer provided data. There are super-enthusiasts and have antenas located in optimal areas. Others may only have an antena in their window and only pickup signals in a very narrow line of sight. In general, lower flying crafts tend to not get picked up (as well) regardless of speed.
To fly in certain airspaces the craft must have an adsb radio turned on and of a certain version. Some general aviation crafts are still lagging behind installing adsb radios.
ADSB is replacing Radar. Quite literally if some one doesn't have an adsb radio they wont be able to be seen because there are too few radar stations / radar operators left to detect them.
All that being said, the Military has an exemption from the FAA adsb rule. By and large they comply, especially on crafts that frequent commercial airports or airfields. But they don't have to comply and often don't.
Hopefully they're ready to take this country back.
Update: just saw 5 blackhawks in Knoxville going west parallel with I-40, but about 5 miles south of I-40. They were crossing over I-140 specifically, NOT headed to our local national guard base, not on adbs
Appear to be spreading out all over the Eastern third of the country. Curious.
PlaneFags what do you think of SAM, wonder where it’ll land
https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=ae115d
As a prefix, SAM means "Special Air Mission", and very common. Hard to tell at this point, but have seen a number of aircraft heading 'possibly' to and from the 'spa'. Hard to track them as ADS-B disappears as they get away from FL.
Caught my eye that it looks like a plane used for AF1 according to the file photo, and coming out of DC. We know Biden only goes to Deleware
That's just one of the lighter birds from "the fleet". More often used for VP or execs, sometimes by POTUS if going to a smaller airport.
Thanks for the info!
And they all seem to have departed various airports, not just one?
Most spent the nights at various airports, with a number of fuel stops -don't have a lot of range. They all originated from Ft. Drum over the last couple days.
Thanks, yes I'd expect the range to be around 2 to 2 1/2hrs. And IIRC the Huey has a fairly low cruise pitch setting speed, around 90kts like an AH64. I flew one in the USA, big bus of a bird!
