Yup, cover for counter attacks. I remember seeing a video of a group of guys moving down a stairway in, how should I say it, a deliberate military manner. One of them said something to the effect of "we're not here for that" (the protest).
Trump waited behind the stage and briefly they showed that he had a red folder in his hand. He delayed his speech a solid hour. He knew what was going on.
