A monastic life I led for a few years of one meal a day and no heat gives me a foundation of rice as a staple...once a day.
Rice is really good. It may not be the most nutritional food choice, but if you've ever been hungry, and I mean REALLY hungry, because you're too poor to buy some food, anything in your belly to stop that hunger is a good thing. Hunger will make a person think of doing things they wouldn't normally do (like stealing food). For themself. Now, imagine being a parent with a starving child.
I think I read somewhere once that the concert-goers at Woodstock kept pockets full of uncooked rice, and when they got hungry would swallow some uncooked, followed by drinking, and the rice would swell up in their belly to make them feel full. For short term, it will suffice.
I like basmati rice-long grain and much MUCH better than Uncle Bens.. add beans and voila, almost perfect food.
Rice is great when you're really hungry for 1000 of something. - Mitch Hedberg
