Preface: I worked in the psychology field just out of college. I was a licensed clinical counselor and residential therapist.
I worked with sex offenders. Levels 1 to 3.
The prevailing thought in the field at that time was that if you harshened the penalties for sex offenses, that it would lead to more murders. The thought being that if you penalized sex offenses to a hard degree, then you would incentivise perpetrators to kill their victims in order to prevent them from coming fourth with evidence.
I didn't know how to think critically about this back then. Its still hard because it seems like a plausible argument.
Now, I realize that with the penalty of death (and a brutal one at that) attached to these crimes, it would be better for society.
Too many of my closest friends/family have been victimized, and I cannot help but think that if a particularly messy/painful death awaited those animals, it might lead to fewer instances of atrocities in the futuee.
