They were told by someone that they couldn't come in without a warrant but thanks to an exigent circumstance (the hoax call) allows law enforcement (under certain circumstances) to enter a structure without a search warrant.
If they entered and found that they had not committed a double homicide but they found 2 lbs of pot their coffee table they could charge them for the pot.
Yeah, that's tough. Because obviously, if they had reason to believe someone was dying, seriously injured, etc. then one could make the argument they could be the injured person's only chance for help. On the other hand ..
But with technology the way it is, they know immediately who occupies a house and what their background info is. Not to say it still couldn't happen, but sounds like they could be hiding behind the 'emergency' when in actuality, they have more info then they are letting on. They seriously need to find the people making these calls and take THEM down.
