It's based on Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of healing who carried a a snake-entwined staff.
The question is, why did this Greek god carry a snake-entwined staff? My Granddad was killed by a cobra bite 39 years ago, so I pay attention when snakes are mentioned. Snakes are beneficial to us based on killing rodents. But are/were they beneficial to us 2400 years ago, in ancient Greece? For medicinal purposes?
Is this a snake, or a parasite (based on the recent controversial post made on greatawakening.win, for which I didn't save the link. Doh!

They considered the snake shedding it's skin to symbolism healing and renewal.
