My husband lost 50 pounds in 7 1/2 months. He was overweight, diabetic and in stage 5 renal disease. He previously ate tons of ice cream, candy, potato chips. I read up on renal diet (because no nurse, renal doctor or dietician ever discussed his diet with him in the hospital). By eliminating all starches (potatoes, bread, rice, noodles), limiting or eliminating high potassium foods (bananas, beans, potatoes, tomatoes), decreasing protein to 3 oz at dinner and increasing salad and low potassium fresh fruit, not only did he lose 50 pounds, but he lowered his potassium level to within normal limits, improved his kidney function to almost stage 3, blood sugars between 75-110, and A1C to 4.5. It takes a scare and being ready to make a change, as well as determination. Only at New Years did he permit a small deviation from his diet.
you are an awesome lady and he is quite lucky to have you. Well done pede!
Why decrease protein? Isn't that the human body's main fuel? What about his other nutrition?
You can have protein but the kidneys work harder, so the limit is 2-3 ounces per meal. Increased fruit and vegetables while watching carbohydrates-berries and apples are lower in carbs compared to say peaches or pineapple. So you need to watch the amount of protein, sodium and potassium foods, and carbs due to the diabetes. Certain fruits like oranges, bananas and grapefruits are higher in potassium. In terms of vegetables most beans and spinach are higher in potassium.
because she doesn't know what she's doing.
