Outside the big cities, rural Canada has close to as many legacy weapons per capita as the US. I know my wifes family (rural Ontario tomato country) has tons of guns. And as you move into wilder country the numbers go up. You dont live in Bear country without a gun. How do you think people in Churchill Manitoba get around the town after dark during the fall. Shit they had to cancel outdoor trick or treating because of polar bears that sometimes come right into town. And thats common these days in Nunuvit, Yukon and Manitoba. I laugh at the WWF polar bear commercials. In the 30s there were some 3000 polar bears worldwide. Today? There are over 30,000. Yes you need to carry a gun.

For polar bears I am sure the calibers are hefty. But how about protection from a tyrannical government?
