So basically they are spying on every damned thing you do.
I already knew this. I had bought a office suite years ago, and it stopped working then demanded I enter the key code or purchase their new license. I already suspected something wasn't right because all the programs were taking twice as long to save, and showed as being unresponsive for a long time before they would save a file.
I my opinion the mother fuckers are saving everything you do on a MS product to the cloud whether you agree to it or not. The time is right for a competitor to step in and stop the spying with a decent product.
If you have office360, yes.
My wife showed me (working remote they gave her the computer and software) just how much stuff the software tracks. I was shocked and let her know that office 2010 is good enough and doesn't require a subscription.
This is an old student addition of 2010. If you have a connection to the internet they will get to it. I never had a problem until I got a new computer. This HP POS is all in on the Google and MS software shit.
I have thought about switching over to a machine with Linux.
Mine has a warning about it being unsupported and they help doesn't work anymore, but otherwise there aren't many features since that have been changed in any noticeable way.
As for Linux, I tried some time ago but always ended up in WINE and eventually gave up. Something I know I should do but always find excuses.
I 100% agree!
Yeah, but what if I wanted to DELIBERATELY piss off a lib or Democrat? Will the nanny Word governess call me bad names and cancel me?
Uninstall Windows, install Linux
Uninstall MS Office, install LibreOffice
You should have done this years ago. Why do you trust Windows given everything you know about Microsoft? They are no better than Google. There's no telling what Windows is doing in the background because it's closed source.
"but I need it for work" .. so install a copy of Windows in a virtual machine.
"but muh games" .. dual boot, or https://lutris.net, PlayOnLinux
"but <xyz application> doesn't work on linux" .. https://alternativeto.net/platform/linux/
"but it's too hard" .. no it isn't
"the terminal is scary" .. on modern distributions, you rarely have to use it, just about everything has a GUI now. if you need it, duckduckgo is your friend.
"I'm not sure which distro to get" .. research the popular ones and pick your favorite https://distrowatch.com/ (right-hand pane)
"I'm scared, hold me" .. install Etcher and run linux in Live mode from a USB stick for a few days, no need to install or uninstall anything, just give it a test drive
Thank you u/BeKind 👈🏻
This is a high quality comment and I think its worthy as a resource post all on its own. Maybe you could do that? You seem to know exactly what to do and could provide a great jump start to many on this board.
Thanks again.
