There were multiple overlapping claims on sectors of Antarctica, so the treaty set all territorial claims aside. Kind of tough to mine for minerals through nearly 2 km of ice cap thickness.

Jules Verne had Captain Nemo claim Antarctica in "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas" (1870).
