A lot of big dark money groups on the left have been trying to force Breyer to retire. Looks like they finally got their way.
As far as the court itself is concerned, it does not appear to gain them any advantage. However, as discussed elsewhere, it could be both a distraction from the disaster that is the Democrat Party and to facilitate the movement of chess pieces.
A 4-4 split favoring the Left for appeals making it to SCOTUS, lets the prior decision stand. Their way of stacking the courts for cases in the pipeline perhaps? The Trump Trio have been constitutional duds, so a 4-4 is plausable
Remember, we're not gaining a lib. The court would actually be down a lib during such time for less liberal advantage than they have now.
