Very good article. I sent it to my family for us to discuss. Two kiddos ... one loves to read, one hates reading.
It is interesting how that trait reflects in them in many ways. Sadly, one shallow, one a deep thinker.
Dad is not a reader, no matter how many years I’ve tried. Seems it is a weirdly genetic trait, which translates into more of nature versus being able to nurture it.
This makes sense. I have adopted the use of audio books, not because I don't like reading but because of limited time and making use of time (listen in the car). Speaking strictly for myself, the discipline of reading over decades and deconstructing ideas and arguments established a habit in my life. I can apply that to listening to Audio.
Audio over video is preferable to me, unless the visual is required (how to fix xyz). The visual component often interferes with my being able to think about/process what is being said.
Thank you SO much for this comment. That may very well be. Hubby is chemical engineer. He literally aced everything to do with math, but still at a very low level on writing / reading.
Since it is your area, do you have a suggested place to begin for a 14 y o? I’ve tried buying books that I thought would be interesting, based on his interests. But I have never gotten anywhere.
I personally feel reading is so very important and such a helpful life skill.
Awesome! Thank you!
I HATE reading and have only read 10 books in my life; but if something is important i will make time for it.
Most of the books i have read include 1984, brave new world, farenheit, atlus shrugged etc. I'm trying to get through the most relevant classics.
Blood Meridian as well, which is nothing to do with current day politics bu is my favourite novel of all time lol
Blood Meridian is my favorite novel as well!
How can you say you hate reading, but love that book?! That book is for people that are passionate about language and writing, and not to mention is very difficult to get through!
Yes it's one of the densest books ever written but my god it is majestic.
I AM passionate about language and writing. Just not sitting down and reading lol. But Cormac's gorgeous descriptions and turns of phrase is haunting.
"God speaks in stones and trees, the bones of things."
"The freedom of birds is an insult to me. I'd have them all in zoos."
"He dances in light and in shadow and he is a great favourite. He never sleeps, the Judge. Oh he is dancing, dancing. He says, that he, will never die."
Just a few of my faves off the top of my head haha. I was thinking of doing an audio reading of it for my youtube channel but the range of western/southern American accents would be tricky for a Brit lol
My son was a reader as am I but his Dad not so much. He could memorize every specific about a gun(loved them). I think maybe he had some photographic memory.
...you can lead a horse to water....
