The jist of the phone call thing, aside from the recorded message I mentioned, is that cell phone technology doesn't allow for cell phones to make calls from the air. (That's why planes have satellite phones.) When a call is connected, it's "locked in" to a specific cell tower. A plane traveling 500mph would pass the range of a tower in seconds.
