omg. hanks was quoting the guy he was playing with that line, it comes from real life. God bless Jim Lovall. he is getting old, and we wont have him for much longer, but I pray we do have him as long as he can stand it.
Hanks did not say it, It was a dude in mission control when the team constructed the fix for the CO2 problem.
"“Among the men in the Canaveral blockhouse and the Houston control room, there was no greater tribute a controller could be paid than to describe him, in the rough poetry of the rocket community, as a “steely-eyed missile man.” There weren’t many steely-eyed missile men in the NASA family. [Wernher] Von Braun was certainly one, [Chris] Kraft was certainly one, [Gene] Kranz was probably one too.”
It does not seem to originate with Lovall, but he talks about it in his memoir.
Edit:- I did not know it had real roots so thanks for that detail.
Ha! Just watched The Martian last night. Excellent movie quote.
Maybe showing your age there bro? (as in youngish (lucky you))
It's from apollo 13 and was repeated on the Martian. Both were great movies although I don't think I can watch Tom Hanks now.
Salute! Fren.

Same at you on the thanks. I had heard it was Lovall saying it about Kranz. So often word of mouth gets twisted.
