I remember when they had the primaries. They wouldn't give hardly any time to the other Republican candidates. They were asking Trump the majority of the questions and were totally propping him up. I was mad at the time because i wanted to hear from some of the other candidates. Then, Trump started to become very popular because he was calling out the media and saying things that the silent majority had been thinking for 8 years but nobody had ever spoken these things out loud. That's when the media turned on him.
Interesting. I did not follow the campaign other than going "well this is interesting." I didn't really get into Trump until he was in office for a bit and I (having taken a "well let's wait and see" attitude due to all the hate and at least he was an outsider) observed various things he was doing being good, and all the criticism being generally irrational, wrongheaded, from the loudest/wrongest people, etc.
They thought he was playing along. So they propped him up. When they realized he wasn't going to follow their script, that's when they released the "grab 'em by the pussy" tape, and all media went negative after that.

Game theory, he turned on them first. He knew they’d prop him up and hammer him later. He hammered them first.
Hillarys emails.
She ordered them to prop up Donald Trump, her strategy was a pied piper play.
That's why the news focused on Trump they thought he would be a clown and ruin ol Jeb Bush
Yes, also Cruz and Carson. The Dems planned to split the Republican vote so whichever won the primary, they couldn't win.
Ahhhhhh

Also, very next paragraph from mention in OP, I wouldn't have guessed that CNN coverage of Trump's 2016 campaign was apparently favorable? Weird.

That's funny. The apprentice was always the master.
