I would say that the US is a "far right" country, as defined in it's constitution which, when operative, severely limits it's government. The left use far-right as an epithet and a slur, but only because they believe in government provided everything (even crack-pipes).
Far-right is really a form of anarchism - highly limited government, or if you like, freedom. Far-right is not, properly, authoritarianism at all.
Not to be confused with nazism or fascism which are authoritarian.
At least this is how I see the left-right spectrum, as the degree of government control.
