Wow…I used to collect old DOS diskettes. I think I learned on 3.1 but 5.0 was good. I liked the IBM version vs MS. I ran OS2 and played with RedHat some so a new LINUX os doesn’t scare me. I’ve ran VM so that archive is GREAT!! I even have a Novell 3.12 CNA Cert. But, I stayed in Aerospace & never started a second career in computing mainly cuz of all the young geniuses flooding the market at that time. Then I went to war (OIF & OEF) and that was that. My computer skills did come in handy in Aerospace tho 👍🏽
I played with OS9 (IBM product) on the Radio Shack Color Computer in the early 80s, but the processor (fraction of a MHz) wouldn't keep up. This system had windows before the first version of Microsoft Windows was released.
I have original disks for all the versions of Windows back to 3.0 which I used on my very first laptop, which had a black and white screen, not color. That was in the late 80s. I also have various versions of DOS, including a late version of DR DOS.
I use Oracle's Virtual Box. I only have the Windows XP VM right now, but I plan to have one or more Linux setups to try.
I might even set up a Color Computer VM and play with some of that stuff. I still have all my old copies of Rainbow Magazine and Hot Coco.
It's a good thing my office/warehouse has a concrete slab floor to carry all the weight. :)
I don't know. I read about them but could never afford one. I started out with a Timex Sinclair. With the 16K memory expansion, the entire system cost me $88. I learned BASIC programming on that one. Then I went to the Color Computer until a few years later when I got an IBM compatible 286 with a huge 20MB hard drive on a card.
Really cool memories, eh? I recall a big clunky 50Mb hard drive a guy had & we were all like, whoa. I learned some Basic in HS but we moved & I didn’t continue with programming. We had a Digital Systems hole-punch TAPE fed computer at that school and I’d hangout after school learning the basics. I started building desktops in Saudi Arabia buying cards, chips, cases & stuff at the Riyadh computer souks (markets). My first was a 386DX4 and it proudly supported a tape backup drive. All software over there was bootleg. I loved it, I miss it and stopped all my servicing & repair later in States after experiencing dealing with some really nasty customers. I stayed in Aerospace cuz fixing machines was easy…but dealing with people was not.
Sidenote…on Christmas Eve last I fixed my neighbors system and they paid me with Christmas fudge. THAT, was rewarding as sugar isn’t my friend but DANG what a nice treat!! 😂
