How is this even legal? Filed my 1040 and got a letter from the IRS saying I needed to verify using the irs website, while going through the motions it’s asking to use and disclose my biometric data to identify me and requiring me to submit my license.
What are my options here? Am I required to submit? My biggest worry is the implication of things to come by submitting to this forceful hand.

The agency said it would no longer use a third-party service, called ID.me, for facial recognition. Critics of the software said the database could become a target for cyberthreats. They also expressed concern about how the information could be used by other government agencies, among other concerns.
Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-OreRon Wayden: "No one should be forced to submit to facial recognition to access critical government services.
The IRS is currently grappling with a worker shortage and an expanded workload from processing tax filings and administering pandemic-related programs. Legislation that would have given the agency billions of dollars to more expeditiously process returns is stalled.
“The IRS takes taxpayer privacy and security seriously, and we understand the concerns that have been raised,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.
“Everyone should feel comfortable with how their personal information is secured, and we are quickly pursuing short-term options that do not involve facial recognition.”
The agency said the transition would occur “over the coming weeks in order to prevent larger disruptions to taxpayers during filing season.”

You are right in that is so very wrong. It has to be for nefarious reasons because they have never done it this way before. I think this has more to do with the social credit scoring/tracking system they want to put in place.
Nah illegals use a tax payer id#. At least the ones trying to become not illegals do lol. Makes no difference to them if they have their biometrics exposed because that's the point of doing it the "right" way. They aren't trying to skirt the system if they're paying their taxes.
E-file you won't get that problem! Go to H&R Block and do an online Tax return, you also get a free E-file it's all free. I filed mine last Sunday and got my return back into my bank account the following Sunday! Took a whole 7 days from start to finish and was painless!

Did you use the free version of Turbotax? I wonder if this is part of the IRS Free File program and not the pay-to-file versions. I'm about to do mine through TT Premium, so I guess I'll know soon...though they always rob me blind anyway

I had to do it back in August for PA's unemployment that I still never got.
Happened to me several yrs ago ..called local Representative and had my check in 48hrs.

I ran into this too. There are ways around it. You can do a paper filing, which takes forever, but if you have access to all your tax documents from last year, you should be able to fill everything in without going through the authentification process.
I always use H&R Block, and when they asked for my AGI for last year, they gave me the option to get it from the IRS website. That's where I ran into the biometrics. Seemed kind of sus to me, so I dug through my files, found everything from last year, and calculated it myself.
And yes, my return was already accepted. They claim I'll get my return by the first week of March.

Though since the IRS building in D.C. has had no one working in it since the plandemic began, I question whether the IRS is even functioning. They never paid tax return money due to millions of people for tax year 2020
