That will probably happen anyway. But we don't value souls in the same way that God does, and I don't think we can possibly comprehend the loss of a soul to God.

One of the reasons Jefferson gave for swift punishment of criminals, especially the death sentence, was to provoke criminals towards repentance for the salvation of their souls.
