But even then, why would they train with wooden guns? We never trained with fake guns when I was in the Army. We had our real assigned weapon and would either dry fire or have blanks and blank adapters.
If they are using wooden weapons, it's not even training. It's acting/role playing.
There is a classic UK comedy show "Dad's Army" making fun of the "Home Guard Regiment"
This was a military group designed to defend England in 1940 when German invasion was believed to be a serious threat. Because it was typically composed of men who were unfit to be sent to front line combat the Home Guard was taken as a bit of a joke, hence the comedy show later.
They had no budget for equipment such as rifles so had a motley collection of personal weapons. During training they really did run around with broom handles yelling "Bang Bang!"
The "Dad's Army" show is probably on youtube, still very funny although it's now quite old.
Devil's advocate (as I have very little clue what's going on): they did say they raised thousands of volunteers to defend the capital but didn't have enough guns for all of them.
