Sudden-never-before-used was made official in 1995. I actually Iived in Ukraine at that time. I have lived in Russia for 3 years and in Ukraine for 3 years. I have a development team in St Pete and in Lviv. It's the prerogative of authorities which have jurisdiction over a geographic region to name entities however they choose. There is nothing woke about spelling a city the way that the authorities of that city spell it.
We no longer spell St Petersburg "Leningrad" for a reason - it was renamed. Kiev is no longer spelled Kiev, it's called Kyiv. As you can imagine, Ukraine sought to distance themselves from the dissolution of the Soviet Union, as did all satellite countries. They did this by re-emphasizing Ukrainian nationalism.
If you check documents dating back to the 50's, you will find that any official document published by the Ukrainian authorities in English always used the Ukrainian spelling of the names. If you get a map of Ukraine from the 60's with Ukrainian spelling of the cities and English transliteration, you will find that it is spelled this way.
I'm cool with you being disappointed in me, however as I am striving to please a much more Significant Audience.
Thanks for the explanation but the the simple truth is no one outside Ukraine, the media etc made this distinction until this situation unfolded and the need for the propaganda of it became clear, and I maintain that the Significant Audience here considers this distinction important.
Yep that's why we're asking since up until a week ago everyone was still using "Kiev" and even a co-worker of mine who was born there spells it that way.
Basically everything woke turns to shit and I'm disappointed that Pilgrim there has decided to use the sudden-never-before-used PC name.

Saying "Keev" is like wearing a mask. While driving. IMO.
So it’s time to change Chicago to Chicongo...as per native actions. I’m sure there are others deserving name changes as well.
Chicongo 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
