Just for fun do a quick search of the term 'singular they' - turns out it dates to the 13th century in English as a neuter-gender pronoun! No joke.
Even the singular reflexive 'themself' is a word.
Crazy but also crazy useful. It never made sense to me that someone would ask a classroom full of 30 females and one male student, "Does everyone have his new textbook and his seating assignment?" Not a fan of gender bending LOL
True, when editing I usually recast the sentence to avoid it, but IMO singular they rocks!
