It's not about being debunked later, they don't care. It's about winning the PR spin with low-info social media morons. Even when later info contradicts earlier "facts" it might be days or even weeks before morons become aware, if ever. In the meantime they continue to retweet and forward the rumors which creates disinfo and confusion amongst anyone not looking for actual fact. And it's that group that relies on mainstream media for their info. So if the rumor they heard earlier is confirmed by what they hear later (CNN/MSNBS/FOX) it makes them more willing to accept anything the powers that be dictate.

Although I'm surprised that we're already seeing retractions within days, like Daily Mail questioning if the "Ghost of Kiev" even exists after just 48 hours.

Usually the damage has been done. People see the lie and it becomes part of the narrative but they never see the retraction.
