I noted the date on the article and see some synchronicity here.
John Wayne should have gotten an Oscar for 'The Searchers'. In the scene where he looks at the white girls that were recovered from the Indians, the look on his face is horrendous, something I've never seen in another John Wayne movie, plus he was pretty cold throughout the movie, an acting skill not otherwise demonstrated. He wasn't given the acting credit he was due.
Since the author notes the final scene, I'll note that John Wayne's pose before he turned and walked away was a tribute to Harry Carey, an actor and long time friend of Wayne's, who often struck that pose in his movies.
