There is also psychological traits to this. We function on noticing patterns to justify actions. When you're told to (by others or by your own self) look out for bees, you begin to spot bees from blocks away, you notice where bees usually congregate. Hell, you would notice their patterns.
Now, imagine such when it involves war.
