Ukraine is about the size of Texas. The country is 223,680 Square Miles. Ukraine is larger than either France or Spain. Putin only brought in about 120,000 Russian soldiers so far. It's impossible for Russia to hold and control an area that large, with hostile neighbors on the border supporting your opponent... without a far larger army.

My bet is that EU nations sent in special teams, professional snipers and are providing weapons and advisors to the Ukrainians. The hired mercenary groups are well equipped to fight the Russian troops, most of which don't appear to be well trained.

In short, Putin can take over Ukraine, but will be bloodied up badly if his troops stay there even for a few weeks. Whatever early success Russia has can become a big loss if they stay in Ukraine.
