Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed into law a bill introducing jail terms of up to 15 years for fake news about the Russian army, as Moscow pushes forward with its invasion of Ukraine.
The bill, adopted by lawmakers earlier on Friday, sets out jail terms of varying lengths and fines against people who publish “knowingly false information” about the military, with harsher penalties to hit when dissemination is deemed to have serious consequences.
Putin also signed a bill that would allow fines or jail terms of up to three years for calling for sanctions against Russia with Moscow facing harsh economic penalties from Western capitals over the invasion.
The past year has seen an unprecedented crackdown on independent and critical voices in Russia that only intensified after the start of the invasion.
Russia’s media watchdog said Friday it had restricted access to the BBC and other independent media websites and blocked social media giant Facebook.
Two news outlets said they will stop reporting on Ukraine to protect their journalists, while the BBC announced a halt of its operations in Russia.
Russian media have been instructed to only publish information provided by official sources, which describe the invasion as a military operation.
State-controlled broadcasters have meanwhile reinforced government narratives about nationalism in Ukraine and Moscow’s claim that Ukrainian soldiers are using civilians as human shields.

Imagine how much better we’d all be if Trump passed these laws his first year in office.
This^^^ Signed the National Defense Authorization act 12 29 12
Sort of, it was a law that news/journalists COULD NOT knowingly publish information that was not correct/factual. Most presidents would extend or "re-sign" the law into affect for lack of better terms. When it came to Obama's desk, he did not continue or extend the law. This essentially made propaganda legal in journalism. Thats why you used to hear that journalists needed 3 independently verified sources. Now we just get a ton of "a person close to the matter said." There is a difference between Op-Ed reports having free speech and organizations claiming to be reporting factual news. A difference a previous commentator is either ignorantly unaware of or intentionally blurring. I thank you for bringing this up because it appears most people don't realize exactly what the Obama administration pulled on the American populace!
Giant news agencies who publish “knowingly false information” about the military, of their country are not excercising free speech, they are undermining their country. CNN should not be able to just say whatever they want and hide behind the 1st Ammendment.
Are you trying to say the 5th ammendment is about guns?
If the virtual town squares like Facebook or Twitter can censor free speech, then the government can institute an anti-propaganda law too.
Knowingly making fake and misleading headlines on the basis of "sources close to" "unnamed sources familiar with the thinking of", etc. should absolutely be punishable.
Freedom of the press is not freedom to create actual propaganda and manipulate people. The first amendment is not there to protect the media doing this either. It is there to protect average citizens from the government.
No wonder CNN left Russia and reddit banned .RU sites.
Russia is literally encircled by NATO, do you think maybe the DS puts a ton of journalists and soros protestors other nasty agents into Russia to undermine their strength? The way I see it is that Putin is literally under siege and so he cannot just have a free country even if he wanted to.
The subtext of this writing reeks of retardism. It implies that it isn't a military operation. But even if it were actually an invasion, it would be a military operation. Because it's an operation..performed by a military.
Invasion is sensationalizing it.
So Lindsey Graham going to jail? 😁
