You should question that narrative that you believe. I would say a lot of the things you consider being 'free' are conditioned upon you. The United States has so much regulation and government red tape that freedom is just a word and not a reality. The US government controls everything in your life and you think that is freedom?
If you look at Russia & China - they have been moving towards free market capitalism and the west is moving towards communism.
I'd say Russians have a lot more freedom then US. I heard it costs $30 to open a new business in Russia. In the US it is thousands.
No one should ask permission to work.
or fish or hunt or travel or trade or...
Oh, I'm not disagreeing with you for the most part because your correct in that the red tape and regulations are totally out of control yet it's easy to see how we're moving towards total control and if we don't stand up it will all be lost. And yes, it maybe cheaper to start a business in Russia and even buy gas a lot cheaper but I still believe when it comes to total freedom the US is still slightly ahead, at least for the time being. And unfortunately, with some of the most corrupt government leaders in the World, if not, the most corrupt it will soon be lost unless something dramatically changes.
