That is the problem with the system: insurance shouldn't exist. It's sole purpose is to fearmonger people into accepting it. Remove insurance from any system and the cost of the product being insured drops exponentially.
I would add that health care providers should not be allowed to charge anyone more than the lowest negotiated rate insurance companies are willing to pay them.
That would keep them from trying to screw those without insurance for the stated standard rate.
This is why my friend just uses those emergency rooms in strip malls. You get charged the same as an uninsured person at a hospital without waiting in triage for 12+ hours. He thought he was actually saving money until we compared notes and he's just saving time.
