I stopped being one last time I renewed. I noticed that the DMV made me go through an extra step in their system to cancel it, and it also prompted me with a "Yes/No" option to make sure I wanted to stop.
I thought that was really strange. Now I'm not surprised.
There have literally been cases of families doing exactly this. When I was on an organ trafficking research kick I remember reading about it, I think Chicago was where the families were finding newspaper where the organs should have been.
