Seems pretty straight forward.

Hunter was abused and grew into a life where his piece of shit father got him involved in all kinds of shady stuff.

Somewhere along the line, Hunter was approached by whitehats who had just as much evidence against him as the bad guys had against him via blackmail.

Hunter agreed to cooperate, either for reduced charges or because he really wanted to get back at his father for what was done to him.

The situation with the laptop was arranged to introduce evidence legally.
