You can get a LifeStraw for $19.00 that will filter 1000 gals, that you could hide in your cloths, take anywhere. Why would you pay 400+ for this?
I want something stationary, for kids and I.
Also have read a lifestraw won't do viruses, that will, and many more than 1000 gallons with a failsafe filter that stops flow when it needs replaced
Boiling your water will also kill viruses.
Super-cheap iodine tablets will also kill every living thing in water. I use them while traveling through Tibet when the only thing to drink is effectively sewage water... and I've never been sick from my treated water. The water will taste of iodine and become pink after treatment, but I don't mind because that's what safety tastes like :-).
A tiny drop of bleach is also super effective, but you'll cause yourself serious harm if you get the measurements wrong. Note that bleach expires relatively quickly so if you're using it for prepping then you'll need to replace it regularly.
Always add a droplet of blue food coloring to your treated water so there is NEVER any confusion - especially if you've got kids and especially if you're using bleach because you won't want to accidentally treat it twice.
I like the LifeStraw range of products for water purification - they don't just make those silly straws but have far better large-scale water purification systems for individuals, families and entire communities.
LifeStraw Community would be a cheaper alternative to LifeSaver product and it'll convert twice as much water and last forever.
Here are some other large-scale water purification solutions from LifeStraw if Community is more than you need.
All you have to do to kill bacteria and virus in water is leave it in the sunlight for a day.

I have a 15,000 gallon pool as water source. I need to make sure I know how to purify it for drinking if needed. Besides drinking, this water source would take pressure off using potable water for other things.
Sees to me that if it had any pool chlorine in it, all I would have to do it let it sit/breath for a while in container, and chlorine would dissipate, and then put in plastic bottle and let it sit in sun for 24 hours to kill any bacteria. Not 100% sure about this though.
Back on my property in North Florida I have an arteasian well. It's around 700 feat deep with approx. 15 lbs of pressure with no pump. Gosh I loved having all that water. If the electricity ever went out, I would just run a hose from the ball valve I had on a two inch PVC running up to my yard and still have water inside my house, with no pump needed. I sold the house but still have the property with the 4in. arteasian well.
Funny, back when I was a kid, growing up on the Florida/Georgia line, we spent most of our days, all day long in the woods. Walking down in hard wood bottom the creeks no more than a few feet wide the color of Coca Cola would flowing. If we got really thirsty, we would find a place where the water was running fast, like over a log and scoop up a handful and drink it. I never remember getting sick.
False.
Sunlight breeds bacteria which is why water supplies need to be stored in a dark place.
You could not be more wrong fren, and you are missing a proven technique that could save your life. Please educate yourself.

This is what you said and what I responded to:
You earlier comment was incredibly vague and dangerous.
And you last comment is even more dangerous because SODIS, if done correctly, only kills bacteria and doesn't kill viruses or purify the water in any meaningful way.
You use words like "disinfect" and "purify" irresponsibly because people will read your wildly misleading comments and believe your false claims. Yes SODIS works for killing bacteria if done correctly. No, SODIS does not purify water in any meaningful way - it just makes it slightly safer and people will then need to use a real method to filter and kill the viruses and contaminants which defeats the purpose of screwing around with SODIS.
SODIS according to my research does kill viruses as well as bacteria. See here and also here
You know as well as I do that during the whole Covid debate, the science showed that the virus will not survive in sunlight. UV will kill a virus on a surface, so it's just common sense that it will kill a virus in a clear container.
I used the term Purify, in the context of my original statement in terms of bacteria, and viruses. I never said "Will totally purify", meaning of chemicals.
This was my original statement: All you have to do to kill bacteria and virus in water is leave it in the direct sunlight for a day. Italicized word DIRECT added so you don't come back with, "but what if it's cloudy"
I was right about this statement, and you were wrong to claim that sunlight contributes to bacterial growth.
You say:
No, SODIS does not purify water in any meaningful way. Who I ask you is using irresponsible language?
There are two things one is primarily concerned with, that can kill you in water. One is chemicals, two is bacteria, and some viruses. I suppose one could choke to death on a stick, but if one is that stupid, good riddance. What kills people short term is not chemicals, it is the bugs, the bacteria mostly.
If SODIS is capable of removing bacteria, in other words the things that kill you in a water shortage situation, and a virus which may harm you longer term, how is that not MEANINGFUL?
Finally, this conversations is not personal to me. This exchange of opinions is what adults are suppose to do when they don't see eye to eye on something, so more power to you. If however you want to actually back up your statements using sound reasoning, and actual facts, it would probably help us to find common ground.
You can't kill most viruses unless the water is boiling.
Your research is wrong.
Also I did not make any claim relative to storing water in a non-clear container. SODIS technique is used to purify the water, If you store water in plastic containers the primary reason you store plastic containers in dark area is not because Sunlight makes bacteria grow where their is none to start with, it's because Sunlight can cause plastic to degrade over time.
For that volume buy or make activated charcoal to make your own.
That's a complete ripoff
I’d stick with Berkey. https://www.berkeywaterfilter.com/
Don't you think it would be pretty hard to carry that coffeemaker like filter along with you if you had to bug out.
They have many models. Just look.
I bought an ro system. APEC brand USA made. Comes out almost distilled quality and can hook to ice maker/fridge water. Have had mine 6 years haven’t changed filters yet, still comes out ~6ppm. It does waste water to rinse the membrane. Just bought my mom one and it was around $200.
I just lost my well pump and use my berkey to filter my lake water.
Works excellent
And mine will filter an Olympic swimming pool worth of water...
Cost 60 bucks 10 years ago.
Edit
Holy shit. I checked the berkey site and the 2.25 gal one i bought is 400 bucks now! That's insane!
And fyi, it takes many hours, nearly half to a fill day, to filter 2 gal.
Does Berkey do viruses also? Was looking at them but not sure
Yes. Essentially anything that can be filtered. Takes 4 to 6 hours to filter 2 gallons.
Heavy metals, bacteria, everything.
The lake water i filtered tasted completely neutral.
Bland actually, which is strange cause it's water lol. But there was nothing there.
All you have to do to kill bacteria and viruses is put the water in a clear plastic bottle and leave it in sunlight for 24 hours.

Get some of those large plastic bottles, fill them up, and let the sun do the work for you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_water_disinfection#/media/File:Indonesia-sodis-gross.jpg
Yes
Me too, almost pulled trigger last night but idk if I need the one with 6 or 8 filters or just the standard one. I tend to go all in lol
