The archaeologist Ron Wyatt found a very good candidate for the ark in Jeremiah's Grotto beneath the Garden Tomb, on the outskirts of Jerusalem:

How it got there is partly recorded in 2 Maccabees 2:1-8, a Deuterocanonical book: it was hidden after the Babylonian conquest of Israel to protect it from looters and destruction.
