To play devil's advocate - my grandfather has late stage muscular dystrophy. Sometimes, if he can't physically hit the alert button if he needs assistance - voice activation is the only option. He can call a phone through it, which essentially works as the alert button. So... Alexa was the option that worked for that situation.
But, many people have them for no practical purpose - but hey what's a sense of security when you can just yell across the room what song to play. (On that note - having access to music he hasn't heard in a long long time was one element that kind of made it worth it)
edit: Hell, with those "smart outlets" you can even turn a fan on. But, hey that kind of dependance can't go wrong right? lol... Amazon Prime offers them for 0.99, yet they sell for a fairly expensive price. I wonder why they would offer the first one so cheap... hm, what's that saying attributed to drug dealers? "first ones free.."
My thoughts exactly. Why have one of these things in your house??
