When this is over, I would like to hear him explain his time in the KGB, and how and why he changed.
I am willing to bet anything that he was approached by the white hats early on, and placed in KGB as their asset. Did he have to do nasty things to go high up in KGB? No doubt. Its between him and the Maker, and I dont envy the eternal price he has to pay or that.
Who says he changed. In order for him to complete any plan he may have wanted to he probably had to follow the path he did. There are only a few ways to power. One may be acting like a commie for a while.
The Oliver Stone Showtime documentary touches on that. If I recall, he said the Soviets assigned you jobs. Period.

He was forced to be part of the Communist party as part of the KGB. But as Wikipedia notes: "In 1999, Putin described communism as 'a blind alley, far away from the mainstream of civilization'."
