I see your point there pede.

Perhaps it’s not about recitation, which is just words spoken as part of your regiment. It’s like mindless prayer,

But better to focus on what do the words actually mean. What is the idea behind the pledge? Why do nation have one? What is the point? Etc etc etc

From there you can steer towards Civics education (which hardly any American even know about), etc.
