All the kids in my neighborhood in FL ran behind the mosquito fogger trucks in the 1960's. They burned oil to create smoke that was mixed with the pesticide. It was probably DDT! Our parents were so clueless regarding such things. Later, the truck quit using the oil smoke and just sprayed a mist of pesticide, and us stupid kids STILL ran behind it! (and the truck driver would yell at us to get away; at least he was smart enough to know how stupid it was, unlike our parents :) )
Some of us kids followed the gang. We had no idea we were doing wrong. We did not have any trucks fogging mosquitoes in my town, but if we had, we would have done the same thing.
In south Louisiana, our parents had hand pump mosquito sprayers that they'd spray throughout the house, including bedrooms while we were sleeping in them!
I've always thought the two major errors of the U.S. of the 20th century was racism and environmental ignorance. Both have been addressed, and other than some idiots across various sectors, both have been fixed. Unfortunately, there are many that still use both issues to manipulate people.
