...why were so many of the US Founding Fathers also Freemasons? If they were, why did they put the 2nd Amendment into the Constitution, among other things? I want to be able to explain this to some friends and family, but oddly enough I trust what fellow Anons say more than I trust various "sources" and their opinions. Thanks for your insights.

The institution, especially in North America was qualitatively different. There are writings indicating profound differences between American (North American) Freemasonry and European Freemasonry at the time, similar to how churches in Europe were tied to, and in most cases derived from, political power. But over time the institutions have been infiltrated. And just like our government, the corruption infiltrates until it gets to the top, from where the corruption can be protected and expanded.
