Pretty sure the storyline had them being half-brothers as well.

Yeah either half brothers or full. I just remember (kayfabe) Undertaker burned the family home down with Kane inside and that's why he had to wear a mask. And of course this led to a sibling rivalry that could only be settled inside the squared circle.
