I know someone that had an encounter with a bat that had rabies. The only reason they were treated for rabies was because they had lots of cuts and scratches on their hands (from being a mechanic) and in the process of fending it off, killing it and bringing it to the lab the cuts may have gotten spittle/foam in them.
The rabid fox that was hanging out near the farmers market, looked very mangy, was foamy at the mouth and was very skittish... it look animal control a long time to catch it... like a week or more.
With a glossy coat and fluffy tail to boot.
