The story centres on Bond's investigation of a diamond-smuggling operation that originates in the mines of Sierra Leone and runs to Las Vegas. Much of Fleming's background research formed the basis for his non-fiction 1957 book The Diamond Smugglers. The origins of this slogan “diamonds are forever” is likely as intriguing as America’s fascination with diamonds. Yet many people don’t realize that if it had not been for one company—perhaps even one person—the face of the diamond industry and its history would have been very different.

This story is likely made up, but many parts are true. Truth is hidden in the fiction.

Oppenheimer (son of the founder of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd.) and N.W. Ayer & Son, a prominent U.S. advertising agency. After their first meeting in 1938, N.W. Ayer began his extensive research and found that the most critical ways to influence the purchase of diamonds was to first create emotional and romantic feelings tied to diamonds. The brilliant marketing, advertising and public relations campaigns further enhanced the notion that diamonds would be forever associated with love, strength, luxury and emotion. Ayer used jewelers, lecturers, celebrities, magazines, entertainment and even had movie scripts and scenes changed to show the stars wearing, shopping and yearning for diamonds. All in all, the end goal was to create an eternal desire for diamonds.

In three short years, the trend of declining diamond sales had been reversed and diamond sales were up over 50%. With Ayer’s incredible achievements for De Beers, he was on a roll. Yet even with this success, the world’s most famous slogan had yet to be developed.

De Beers sounds a lot like "The Deers". Diamonds connect to stags and the Y-head.

After unsuccessfully trying to create a slogan for De Beers which would perfectly express of the qualities of a diamond mingled with romance, there was finally a stroke of genius in 1947. One of Ayer’s young copyrighters, Frances Gerety, was working late one night to the point of exhaustion. Finally in desperation, she put her head down on the table and pleaded for help. Just before she left work that night she scribbled the words “a diamond is forever” on a piece of paper and the rest is history. This may have had a simple start, but the result was America’s most famous advertising slogan and today over 90% of American’s recognize it.

This is mostly just a nice story for the masses. This was not just come up with by some desperate worker who hit a breakthrough. Just a story the masses to believe.

The discovery triggered more people’s fascination with diamonds as the precious stones became commonly available on the market. However, the British businessmen behind the operations in South Africa realized that they needed to maintain diamonds’ aura of mystery and convince people that the stones were very rare. In 1888, they started the famous cartel called De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd, now known as De Beers. The company began expanding its control over both the supply and demand for diamonds in the following decades. In 1938, a big change happened when Harry Oppenheimer, the son of De Beers’ founder, enrolled an ad agency called N.WAyer. Its job was to change people’s perspective on diamonds especially in the United States, where people were already offering diamond engagement rings but with small and cheap stones.

The company was founded in 1888 by British businessman Cecil Rhodes, who was financed by the South African diamond magnate Alfred Beit and* the London-based N M Rothschild & Sons bank.*[4][5] In 1926, Ernest Oppenheimer, a German immigrant to Britain and later South Africa who had earlier founded mining company Anglo American with American financier J.P. Morgan,[6] was elected to the board of De Beers.[7] He built and consolidated the company's global monopoly over the diamond industry until his death in 1957. During this time, he was involved in a number of controversies, including price fixing and trust behaviour, and was accused of not releasing industrial diamonds for the U.S. war effort during World War II.[8][9]

Sir Ernest Oppenheimer (22 May 1880 – 25 November 1957) was a diamond and gold mining entrepreneur, financier and philanthropist,[1][2][3] who controlled De Beers and founded the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa.

Da Beers got too much bad attention for its 90% monopoly on the blood diamond trade so they had to make a deal to "break" it up. But they didn't really. They just had to make it look less obvious.

The holocaust was the perfect cover. You couldn't accuse them of the obvious. Also they got to purge all the jewish families who weren't loyal enough to the "cause". When they first attempted communist revolutions there were many Jewish families in Poland who chose Poland over the "cause". They remembered those families and later rounded them up and exterminated them but blamed it on the "Nazis".

By 1944 the industry employed 3,300 workers in 33 factories, with £P 1,320,000 capital investment, entirely Jewish. The value of exports was over £P 3,200,000 mainly to the United States, Canada, and India; it was the largest value of any single commodity exported from Mandatory Palestine that year.[

SINCE 1888 the De Beers company has held a virtual monopoly on the diamond business. Initially Cecil Rhodes, a Gentile, had total control of the firm. In 1893 he contracted to sell De Beers’ entire production of diamonds to a syndicate of ten London firms. All ten firms were owned by Jewish merchants and interconnected by marriage and family ties. But the Jews’ involvement with diamonds is hardly new.

By 1800 the Jews controlled virtually the entire world diamond traffic. South African diamond mines were discovered in the eighteen-sixties, which was about the time that the diamond supply from India was exhausted.

Through a series of clever manipulations, and with the intervention of the Jewish banker Lord Rothschild, Oppenheimer became chairman of the board of De Beers in 1929. Oppenheimer was knighted and became Sir Ernest Oppenheimer.

Today diamonds, still under control of the Oppenheimer family monopoly, flow from the cutting centers in Europe and Israel to the main consumer markets in the United States and Japan. The diamond business is an almost exclusively a Jewish enterprise, with Jews occupying positions as diamond cutters, brokers, bankers, jewelry manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and even diamond buyers for retail establishments.

Today people associate diamond rings and other diamond jewelry with marriage and love. This association is largely an artificial creation by the diamond monopoly.

In 1957, Russia entered the picture following the discovery of large quantities of diamonds in Siberia. De Beers recognized the threat and struck a deal with the Soviet government to purchase 95 percent of Russia’s annual rough diamond output at a 10-20 percent premium, thus ensuring that all Russian diamonds could be properly channeled through the CSO. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia was in a state of economic decline and sensed the substantial revenue increase it could realize were it to take its diamonds straight to market.* In 1984, Russia broke from the cartel and flooded the Antwerp clearing house with polished diamonds.* As a result, De Beers experienced a sharp decline in profits, and other suppliers threatened to follow in Russia’s footsteps.
