We have a great ‘system’ where we have 3 generations living under the ‘one roof’. We have two joined homes; son DIL and granddaughters in front and hubby and I at back. The yard is 1700 sq m so plenty of room for girls to run around, have gardens cubby house etc. My DIL went back to work and son is a mine supervisor with 3 days over weekend. We are there when needed and it’s a two way street with my son DIL there when hubby had heart attack. We have a family dinner weekly with other family joining us. The air is always filled with the noise of littlies as next door have similar aged children. But quiet when the older ones are at school. I would not recommend sharing a ONE home. Each family needs their respective spaces and the old saying ‘two many cooks spoil the broth’ sums that up perfectly. It is a big learning curve and discipline is always left to the parents, but we correct a situation, not discipline. We also have a fold out bed and I bought them special bedding with bush babies and Australian flora and fauna on it to make it ‘theirs’. If Mum is starting early, it’s sometimes easier when dad is on nightshift for the girls to have a ‘sleepover’ than to wander next door at 5:30 am and wait until they rise. No one’s sleep is disturbed. While not for all, I believe this situation will grow out of need as things spiral downhill as inflation eats into respective incomes. We love it and feel blessed that we can share in each other’s lives.
