Agree with you on non-invasive tech, it’s by far a better approach and far more challenging. Even that tech can be used for nefarious purposes as well. I’m of the mind that if you’re able to ‘Read’ something you’re able to ‘Write’ something.
For example, if we were able to ‘Read’ neural pathways as a wearable, it mean our understanding of these pathways are so damn good we’re easily able to Manipulate them from the outside-in.
I fear that Tech will continue to advance regardless, it’s bound to happen. Perhaps there is one factor that we have yet to fully appreciate … neuroplasticity? Or perhaps the ability for us to improve upon our own mind-body function? Etc.

For right now, it's largely a matter of Digital Signal Processing and Machine Learning. Signals recorded from the scalp are very broad and spread out while signals from implants are local and easy to locate/map out. However for classifying movement directly from the brain, Noninvasive methods have about the same classification accuracy as Invasive (70-75%). There are many ways to improve on this and I think you will see some major improvements in Noninvasive BMIs with the advent of OPM-MEG sensors running at room temp. OPM-MEG practically eliminates the volume conduction of the signal moving through tissue and becoming distorted (think like an electric lightning bolt moving through air and randomly hitting the ground, this is the issue with EEG).

Excellent stuff, I’m going to remember you my garden varietal pede, I have a lot of questions on these type of topics!
Sounds good! Ask away when your mind comes upon a question and I'll do my best to answer :)
