I'm not even that old (but pretty old), and until recently my impression was that the pentagram star was protective: people summoning demons in fiction summoned them inside the pentagon part because the demons couldn't get out. Same with the seal of Solomon. All of a sudden geometry has acquired new meanings. And you notice it's all evil. No one ever mentions wards or images of faith.
