This reminded me of a couple of black Patriots from the time of the Revolution:
Phyllis Wheatley and James Armistead, and of Samuel Adam's reaction to his wife inheriting a slave.

IT’S TIME TO UNITE AND FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM.
TOGETHER, we are STRONG.
APART, we are weak.
PATRIOTS HAVE NO SKIN COLOR.
Q
Phyllis Wheatley was the original 'Patriot Poet', writing many poems about God's mercy and other topics. A book of her poems was published in England, and sent to George Washington. He loved it and invited her to visit him.
James Armistead won his freedom by spying for America, and even the British were impressed by his bravery and boldness.
As For Samuel Adams, his niece reported his response on the news of his wife inheriting a slave: "A slave cannot live in my house! If she comes, she must be free!" This was originally discovered in the Life and Public Services of Samuel Adams and included in Ira Stoll's Samuel Adams, A Life
