Bird fear makes sense, if you're a swamp creature.

Lots of people have pet birds, and many folks keep chickens for meat and eggs. Chickens are easier to keep than, say, steers or hogs, so they are common.

You want to get rid of handy sources of meat and protein, and continue to demoralize the general population by killing off their pets.
