You know how the Ukraine steel plants are all abuzz these days?

During WW2 and the Cold War, Steel Plants were rigged up with underground bunkers so they could still operate in the event of a bombardment.

The Red October Steel Plant in Stalingrad was obliterated during World War II and was rebuilt by the Soviets before the war ended, using such materials as they could obtain.

The machinery is 25 year out of date, and the director of the factory admitted recently that some of the machines were 50 years old.

Close to the factory is a plant club, which is extremely clean, containing a good theater, recreation rooms, library, canteens, and billiard rooms. The general standard was far in advance of similar clubs [..redacted...] I assume it was referencing our own US "clubs" near and under our own steel plants.

All the cranes, except the 50-ton crane used for handling liquid metal, are operated by women.

Now, answer me this... Why are nearly all the workers at the plant women? This was in 1954, the war was over, so why not men in the factory?

The equipment is up to 50 years old. That means they're using steel foundry equipment from 1904...

Does this pass the sniff test?

What I'm reading here is that this steel plant probably doesn't make most of its profit off steel...

An alloy, for one.

Phonetic with "steal", as in stolen votes or stolen property.

But, what really matters is the old terminology.

Aha, you see what "steel" really means now?

It is synonymous with "weapon."

So, steel plants, or at least the discussion around them, truly refer to weapons manufacturing.

But not necessarily the shoot-bang or sharpy-stabby variety. What does the phrase "steel yourself" mean?

So, a steel plant is meant to "harden" things, and turn them into weapons.

They were turning people into secret agents at the Red October Steel Plant. Hardening them and turning them into living weapons; teaching them to feel no pain and to show no emotion.
