Alice Liddell's father was ecclesiastical dean of Christ's Church, Oxford.
When Alice Liddell was a young woman, she set out on a grand tour of Europe. She became a romantic interest of Prince Leopold, the youngest son of Queen Victoria, during the four years he spent at Christ Church. Leopold named his first child Alice, and acted as godfather to Alice's second son Leopold.
It's possible that Leopold was also involved with Alice's sister Edith. At her funeral on 30 June 1876, Prince Leopold served as a pall-bearer
this too: Prince Leopold was an active Freemason, being initiated in the Apollo University Lodge, Oxford, whilst resident at Christ Church. He was proposed for membership by his brother, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales,[13] who was at the time the Worshipful Master of the Lodge,[14] and was initiated in a joint ceremony with Robert Hawthorne Collins, his friend and tutor, who later became Comptroller of his Household.[15] He served as Master of the Lodge from 1876 to 1877, and was later the Provincial Grand Master for Oxfordshire, still holding that office at the time of his death.[16] In 1882 he laid the foundation stone of the Masonic Hall on Marlborough Street in Banbury
Prince Albert was "Albert in a can" once they found out he was a cross-dressing Jack the Ripper performing ritual murders. A generous dose of morphine took care of him. Problem solved.
