In this case, yes.
Anglican England at the time wouldn't permit Catholic elements to take hold, so I can't say with any certainty the author was including them.
I'm not saying the Catholics aren't free of the same sins, only that the Walrus has different facets if he were Catholic which are absent from the analogy. Papal elements are notably missing. Besides, making it overtly Catholic in theme would have ended up a little too on-the-nose and could have been considered throwing shade at the Catholic Church, which would have drawn too much attention from the anti-Catholic sentiments of the English people at the time. He wrote it around 1890, after all.
This is a much fairer take than I expected. Thank you.
I've just run into a surprising number of people here who are all "fuck the Luther heresy" or some such bullshit.
We can argue theology later. Right now, we've got a world to awaken.
My stance is that the moment all the people with enough disgust at the Catholic Church decided to leave instead of weed out the corruption, the fate of both sects was sealed. Division tactics were at play from the Cabal.
Those with enough gumption were convinced to get up and leave because "I can do it better!"
I can see Satan saying the same thing about God's Kingdom...
Meanwhile, the corruption they were disgusted at was real, and was then able to take over the garden unabated now that the honest gardeners went off on their own instead of discovering that the reason the weeds kept coming back was because the Adversary was there sowing them all along.

When all the good people leave something because it is rotting away, don't be surprised when the rot spills over into your greener pastures.
Catholics are wrong because they permit the corruption, using the excuse "the corruption is fine as long as we do more good than ill!" Hypocrites. Remove the beam from your eyes, that you may remove the splinters from your neighbors...
Protestants are wrong because they would rather replace something with another whenever it breaks down instead of repair it. This is a wasteful impulse that feeds our current condition in accepting cheap tat from China and then replacing it when it breaks down in less than a year because the product of slave labor is always cheaper than the cost of repair...
To accept we are sinners is the meaning of being Christian. You cannot clean yourself in a bath until you are willing to recognize your own stench and dirt built up under your nails.
This is probably more than you were expecting, but when I get on a roll I can't control the letter count. Just know, neither faction is in the right, because they have formed separate factions. If Satan's Kingdom cannot stand divided amongst itself, why then do we assume God's Kingdom should stand when divided? Until we combat the division tactics, Satan will always be one step ahead of our attempts. Unity through Jesus showed the path forward, if only we take him seriously.
I'm saving this. There's a lot of wisdom here.
Speaking as a man who was raised Lutheran, but fell out of it when I realized how corrupt my denomination had gotten--especially now that they're all pushing the jab.
Maybe I should stick it out after all.
Being the only dissenting opinion on such things is a difficult vocation. Find one other to help and then you'll have a chance to change some minds. Otherwise, you'll just be used as a target dummy and straw man to prove that you're the crazy one, and not them.
Read the story of Elijah and Elisha. Closely track the companionship between the two. It will give you a road map on how to proceed, if you truly wish to challenge the hypocrites in charge.
And by "challenge" I mean like a challenging puzzle, rather than an adversary. It's one thing to tear down your opponent, it's another to wrack their brain and show them the only solution to a problem requires them to get down off their high horse and see things from a human perspective.
