Seriously guys, I'm really getting sick of this. Yes, it's important to learn how to research, but remember when they invented the calculator and the teacher kept telling you how important it was to learn to do it on paper, and yet...there's a fucking calculator?
This place is our calculator. Nobody is going to take anyone else's words at face value, true. And we shouldn't. But the truth is not everyone knows what everyone else knows and we're not going to learn what everyone knows if we keep sticking our noses in the air and saying "look it up yourself."
You looked it up apparently, do us all a favor and show us where you looked. It will help get us all where we need to be a hell of a lot faster.
I fully agree. The emphasis on the board should be information sharing, not proctoring. The learning of research skills should occur at home. Nothing more frustrating than an exchange that consists of
"Do you mind explaining what you mean?"
"Go sit in front of this 2-hour video."
Any point can be explained in a few sentences. If you can't do this, you are not in command of the subject. If they need more information, they can ask, and you can mention what subjects to look up. I've never had a problem being generous with information. What would be the point of being miserly? Johannes Kepler turns to Tycho Brahe and asks "Do you mind if I consult your observational data on the motion of the planets?" And Brahe (in the spirit of some on this page) replies, "Screw you. Make your own measurements."
To me, you give someone the TL;DR but you show them where you got your info so they can get into it more heavily on their own should they desire. Again, this place is like a calculator. We can use it to get going in the right directions faster and arrive at solid conclusions sooner, which helps everyone.
